Pain: EDS Awareness Month Day #6

Pain, its such a vague concept. Especially when you are in constant pain every single day of your life. What is pain? How do you measure it? How do you treat it? Are drugs bad? These are all questions that are always being asked about pain. I really dont know how to scientifically define pain, but this is what i do know. Its isolating, its gnawing, it ruins relationships and friendships, it doesnt care whether you are a newborn or 100. It can come at anytime, anywhere. If there is an effective method to treat pain I dont think any EDS/Fibro/RA or other chronic pain sufferer knows what it is. Most people try so many drugs, remedies, patches, exercises, and anything else they can think of to get rid of the pain. No matter what you do though, it always comes back. It is unrelenting. Are drugs bad? Yes and no. Yes they arent the best thing. You can get addicted to them when you dont need them, they can have bad side effects, they can cause organ damage. However, for someone who is in so much pain that they cant get out of bed, even to go to the bathroom, it can be a G-d send. That is why I think drugs are useful. Drugs can help people function that normally wouldn’t be able to. If drugs can help you live a more productive life, you should take them (you know, with a doctors supervison). Pain is not for the faint of heart, and if I was using a scale of 1-10 right now it would be about a 6.5. But I smile through it. I learn how to put up a wall so know one sees and It works. At the same time, if you have a loved one with a chronic illness, please know that they probably deal with pain on a daily basis and learn to tailor what you have planned to that persons pain level.
